Description: | This research project was studied on medicinal plants widely distributed in Sa Luang-Kee Lek Community Chiang Mai Province Thailand. In this area, 118 species have been found and 75 species of them have been used in the traditional medicine. Curcuma sessilis (Thai name; Gra-Jiew), commonly found in this region, has been investigated based on the ethnopharmacological literature. Steam distillation extract of this plant yielded the purple essential oil [0.2 % (w/w)]. The plant extract has been investigated on the anti-oxidant properties in both DPPH free radical scavenging and ABTS reducing activities. It was found that the plant extract showed the antioxidant activity with the IC50 value of 125.41 mg/ml. In vitro antimicrobial studies on the essential oil extract have been carried out on the five bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi using the Agar Disc Diffusion Method. The result showed that the extract exhibited the inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Salmonella typhi Through the experimentation of GC-MS, it was found that the chemical constituents of the essential oil extract consisted of alpha- and beta-Pinene, Camphene, 1,8-Cineole, Borneol, beta-Elemene, Curzerene, t-Muurolol, Germacrone, and Camphor. |
